Cross-connection control

Backflow prevention

Annual backflow assembly test reports are due to the district by August 31 every year.

What this is and why it matters

A cross connection is any point where your drinking water plumbing could connect to something that is not drinking water — an irrigation line, a hot tub, a hose left in a pond. If pressure in the water main drops, water can flow backwards (backflow) and pull that contamination into the public system.

A backflow prevention assembly is a valve that stops that from happening. The Washington State Department of Health requires the district to run a Cross Connection Control Program (WAC 246-290-490) and to keep records of each assembly, its location and its test reports.

The district requires all customers on its water system to comply with state and local rules for approved backflow assemblies. These assemblies must be installed, maintained and tested every year by an approved, licensed Backflow Assembly Tester, at the customer’s expense.
